Vinyl chloride, is a regulated and carcinogenic compound, belonging to the class of organochlorides.[1] It is an industrially important chemical, used as a monomer in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which finds a variety of applications in food wrapping films, raincoats, electric insulation, pipes and bottles, plastic containers, etc.[2]
Vinyl chloride is a colorless gas, which can serve as a monomer for the industrial production of poly(vinyl chloride)[3] homopolymer and copolymer[4]. It can also be used in the production of vinyl stearate, vinylidene chloride, tri- and tetra-chloroethylene.[4] It can be obtained via reaction of hydrochloric acid with acetylene derived from calcium carbide.[4]
