Application
2,4,6-Trichloroanisole solution has been used as a drinking water odor standard for the analysis of trace odor components in drinking water samples using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS).[1] It has also been used as certified reference material for the quantification of the analyte in red wine using gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD).[2]

General description
2,4,6-Trichloroanisole, belonging to the class of chloroanisoles,[2] is an odorant responsible for the musty-mildew-like aroma of cork taint in bottled wines.[1][2] It occurs due to contamination from the cardboard used for cork transportation, usage of hypochlorite as the cork bleaching agent, wood preservatives, biocides, fungicides, and herbicides containing pentachlorophenol, 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, etc.[2]
