4-Nonylphenol (NP) belongs to the class of phenolic xenoestrogens, with estrogen effects, which adversely affect the health and reproduction of humans and animals.[1] It is released into the environment as a degradation product of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs), widely used in industrial, household, and commercial applications.[2] This compound is also used as a precursor in the production of non-ionic surfactants.[1]
This compound is listed in the SVHC (Substances of very high concern) candidate list of ECHA (European Chemicals Agency)
