Application
Perfluorohexanoic acid may be used as an analytical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in the following:
biological samples using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection[1]
dissolved/particulate phases of wastewater and sewage sludge using liquid chromatography-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS)[2]
whole blood samples using high-performance liquid chromatography- negative electrospray single quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC/ES-MS)[3]
General description
Perfluorohexanoic acid belonging to the class of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), with a 5-carbon perfluoroalkyl chain, was developed as an alternative to the environmental pollutant, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).[4] The degradation of perfluorohexanoic acid is complex, due to the stability of the carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond.[5] It is most commonly used as a wetting agent, corrosion inhibitor, lubricant, and foam fire extinguishant.[1][6]
