Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) is a legume belonging to the Fabaceae family (also known as Leguminosae), which includes beans, peas, green beans, alfalfa, and lupins.

Peanut allergy can manifest with a variety of symptoms, ranging from mild oral allergic reactions or urticaria to severe, life-threatening systemic reactions, namely anaphylaxis or bronchial asthma. Anaphylaxis caused by peanuts is considered to have the highest fatality rate among all food allergies. Peanut allergy affects more than 0.5% of children in the general population.
