Sesame is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Pedaliaceae family. The most common species are Sesamum indicum (white sesame) and Sesamum radiatum (black sesame).

Allergy to sesame seeds and sesame-derived products can manifest with a variety of symptoms, ranging from mild oral allergic reactions or urticaria to severe, life-threatening systemic reactions, namely anaphylaxis or bronchial asthma. Sesame allergy is estimated to affect 0.1%–0.9% of the population and is more common in Asian countries. Sensitive individuals may exhibit cross-reactivity with peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, rye, and poppy seeds.
