Mustard is a condiment made from the seeds of the mustard plant, including white or yellow mustard (Sinapis alba), brown or Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), and black mustard (Brassica nigra). Oriental mustard, also known as Chinese mustard or Jie Cai/Gai Choy (Sisymbrium directionale), is another member of the mustard family, as is wasabi (Eutrema japonicum).
Mustard allergy can manifest with a variety of symptoms, ranging from mild oral allergic reactions or urticaria to severe, life-threatening systemic reactions, namely anaphylaxis or bronchial asthma. Mustard allergy is considered one of the major food allergies in certain geographical regions, although no reliable estimate of its global prevalence is available.
