Insulin from bovine pancreas

The insulin gene is mapped to human chromosome 11p15.5.[1] Application
Insulin from bovine pancreas has been used in endometrium cell culture.[2][3] It has also been used to perform insulin tolerance test and to study the effect of protein undernutrition in laying hens.[4] Insulin from bovine pancreas was used during experimental design and treatments. Experimental animals (like cow) were infused with bovine insulin to decrease blood glucose to a constant level.[5] Biochem/physiol Actions
Abnormal insulin secretion or function leads to diabetes mellitus, obesity[6] and other carbohydrate metabolism disorders.[7] The biological effects of insulin are mediated by insulin receptor (glycoprotein) and it integrates major signaling pathways.[7] Two-chain polypeptide hormone produced by the β-cells of pancreatic islets. Its molecular weight is ~5800 Da. The α and β chains are joined by two interchain disulfide bonds. The α chain contains an intrachain disulfide bond. Insulin regulates the cellular uptake, utilization, and storage of glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids and inhibits the breakdown of glycogen, protein, and fat.
