Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a 303-amino acid hormone protein,[1] which is located at human chromosome 2p23.3.[2] Biochem/physiol Actions
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulates melanocortin receptor (MC1R to MC5R).It is implicated in the production of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH).[1] Hypomethylation of ACTH promoter region in thymic carcinoids is associated with ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome.[3] Mutations in this gene are associated with aberrant fusion protein and impairing melanocortin signaling in hypoadrenalism.[4] Dysregulation of ACTH leads to Cushing disease.[5] Stimulates synthesis and secretion of glucocorticoids by adrenal cortex.
