Application
Allantoin may be used as a pharmaceutical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in pharmaceutical formulations by chromatography techniques.[1] These Secondary Standards are qualified as Certified Reference Materials. Biochem/physiol Actions
Purine metabolite via the uric acid pathway. Uric acid also reacts with free radicals to produce allantoin, thus allantoin may be a useful biomarker for oxidative stress.
General description
Allantoin, the final catabolic product of purines in mammals,[1] is a highly polar and amphoteric substance.[2] Allantoin is mainly used for skin protection as the drug promotes cell proliferation and wound healing.[3] Pharmaceutical secondary standards for application in quality control, provide pharma laboratories and manufacturers with a convenient and cost-effective alternative to the preparation of in-house working standards.
