Ferric citrate provides a source of iron used in cell culture applications. It provides iron in a less toxic form than free iron salts. Ferric citrate has been used as medium supplement in human osteosarcoma cell (U2OS) culture,[1] human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells[2] and adult primary cardiomyocytes.[3]
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ferric citrate is used as a component of protein-free medium. It is used as a substitute for transferrin in mouse hybridomas culture. Ferric citrate enhances IgM production.[4] It indirectly stimulates the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) by favoring high amphiregulin oncoprotein levels in colon cancer.[5] Ferric citrate is effective in binding to phosphate in patients with dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease.[6]
