Methanol

General description
Methanol is a primary alcohol, which is commercially manufactured from methane.[1] It can also be obtained via pyrolysis of wood.[1] It can find applications in organic synthesis reactions, as a highly polar solvent.[1] This substance is listed on the positive list of the EU regulation 10/2011 for plastics intended to come into contact with food.
Application
Methanol may be used as an analytical standard for the determination of the analyte content in biodiesel,[2] wine,[3] and biological fluids[4][5] by gas chromatography (GC) technique. It can also be used as a solvent/eluent for the preparation of various standard solutions and the extraction of analytes for their subsequent determination using analytical techniques.[6][7][8][9] Refer to the product′s Certificate of Analysis for more information on a suitable instrument technique.
