M-CSF is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 1p13.3.[1] It is a glycosylated polypeptide, which exists as a homodimer.[2] M-CSF is produced by macrophage, fibroblasts, lymphocyte and endothelial cells.[3]
Biochem/physiol Actions
Macrophage CSF (M-CSF) as a growth factor, stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of monocyte/macrophage-lineage cells.[3][4] It also boosts antibody-dependent, cell-mediated cytotoxicity by monocytes and macrophages.[5] In addition, human M-CSF inhibits bone resorption by osteoclasts.[6] It might also play a crucial role in atherosclerosis.[3] Overexpression of the gene has been observed in Paget′s disease of bone (PDB).[1]

Analysis Note
The specific activity was determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation of murine M-NFS-60 cells (mouse myeloid Leukemia indicator cell line).
