EGF from mouse

General description
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent growth factor that stimulates the proliferation of various epidermal and epithelial cells.[1] The gene encoding this protein is localized on mouse chromosome 3.[2] Recombinant murine EGF is a 6.0kDa globular protein containing 53 amino acid residues, including three intramolecular disulfide-bonds.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been shown to inhibit gastric secretion, and to be involved in wound healing.[3][4] EGF signals through a receptor known as c-erbB, which is a class I tyrosine kinase receptor.[5] This receptor also binds with transforming growth factor-α (TGF-α) and VGF (vaccinia virus growth factor). Injection of EGF into neonatal and adult rats has been shown to induce neurobehavioral deficits related to schizophrenia.[6] Physical form

Preparation Note
Centrifuge the vial prior to opening. Reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.5-1.0 mg/ml. Do not vortex. This solution can be stored at 2-8°C for up to 1 week. For extended storage, it is recommended to further dilute in a buffer containing a carrier protein (example 0.1% BSA) and store in working aliquots at -20°C to -80°C.
